Start with the carving of straight lines first. These lines are vertical to the grain of the wood so they are easier to carve. Carving along the grain parallely may cause the grain to lead the knife to the side. This is why first, we should cut the vertical lines, then the lines that close a 45 degree angle to the grain. Below there are 6 patterns that should be drawn on and carved out of linden and that way they can provide a major help in gaining knowledge of the grain. These plans are free to download and use.
